It would be interesting to have spoken to other local developers on their contrasting experiences. I have found that custom built solutions work best for small to medium sized clients. The up-front work is more, but the long-term payoff is better.

Love this article. I found some great open-source java eCommerce solutions, but they were more enterprise level and overkill for smaller shops. Had to use the PHP junk out there until I found Magento.

I love how you contacted and connected with local developers. I need to do the same.

Nice write-up on a local company using a "new" open source package. My RSS reader last week highlighted a notice about an upcoming book "php|architect's Guide to Programming with Magento" (http://www.phparch.com/c/books/id/9780973862171). I was curious about what Magento is and who is using the project on production sites. Your article answered both of those questions. Thank you.
