MoFo ‘Magazine’

June 8, 2011 By Steve Borsch

Always on the hunt for resources we can share with our Minnov8 readership, I thought I’d offer you something I received via email today from a PR firm for the law firm of Morrison & Foerster, a global intellectual property firm. While good, whoever sent this out doesn’t “get” the fact that we’re in a new world of content delivery, sharing and consumption.

I found the content very intriguing and that’s why it’s being shared with you. From articles on how patents are used in hot markets for competitive advantage to one on stock buybacks to the big one on getting ready for the recovery, they’re short but intriguing enough to spark interest in knowing more.

While that content within this Spring/Summer issue of their “magazine” (PDF) is good, as we all know design and user interface makes content either easy to consume or presents barriers to its use.

I’m embarrassed FOR them that it’s a TECH publication that is a PDF, and not a very well executed one at that! Not only is this less accessible than alternatives (like good HTML) but they go from single pages to a “spread” layout that, on their PDF page 22, has three pages and ONE OF THEM IS BLANK! You’d be doing a lot of pinchin’ and zoomin’ if reading on an iPad or “+” to make it bigger if in a browser on a PC.

So while the content is kinda, sorta worth the effort to consume, it could be so much better. Thinking that their website might offer up a better experience and easier access to this content, I went there. They bounce from white to black pages, navigation that isn’t consistent and, for example, under “Resources” I selected the search “Publications” and couldn’t find this magazine. I found myself shaking my head and chuckling over how their website was worse as I searched “MoFo Tech” in the searchbox, and found, a bunch of magazine covers linked to PDFs just like this issue.

My intent with this post is not to rain on Morrison & Foerster’s parade, but rather point out a fabulous resource and to share the lesson I took from my experience reading this publication: Any of us who have tremendous content value to deliver—like MoFo definitely does as a major IP law firm—but don’t focus on making it as easy as possible for our audience, completely miss the entire value proposition and its potential impact. Whether you’re delivering a how-to video for your company, an email newsletter, or (God forbid) a newsletter in a not-very-well-executed PDF, make damn sure you make your viewer/readers experience a good one.

Code 42 Gets a Dose of Awesome

June 2, 2011 By Phil Wilson

During our podcast from Minnebar with Code 42‘s CEO Matthew Dornquast a few weeks back we talked at length about the coming together of Code 42 and Recursive Awesome. Well it’s official.

While the press release indicates both an acquisition and a merger, Recursive Awesome co-founder, Justin Grammens (and, in the interest of full disclosure, partner with yours truly on projects including Mobile March) addressed the deal simply, “This isn’t about one company acquiring the assets and client list of another company. It’s about two very talented teams, coming together to build awesome products.” Code 42’s Dornquast echoed that sentiment by saying, “It became obvious we had familial business DNA – products, customers, values – all nearly identical.”

In conversations with Grammens, who along with RA Co-founder Sam , the goal was always to develop products. He noted “You can spend years working to get your own products off of the ground, or you can partner with a successful product company”.

According to the company, “The entire Recursive Awesome team will join Code 42 Software in their newly expanded headquarters at 1 Main St in Northeast Minneapolis.”

The goals of two companies met, jobs all around, and an exciting future ahead for all. In a word…Awesome!

Minnov8 Gang 120 – Is the Cloud our Idol?

April 22, 2011 By Steve Borsch

Now that Amazon’s cloud computing infrastructure had a catastrophic failure this week and Apple was revealed to be storing location data on iPhones and iPads (see: Apple collecting, sharing iPhone users’ precise locations and our Sen Al Franken asking Steve Jobs what’s up), how can we bet our businesses on the cloud and trust that companies aren’t stomping on our privacy? Or is neither one of these any big deal?

At the same time the cloud is stumbling toward its future like a toddler trying to walk in daddy’s shoes, there is no question that toddler is going to grow in to an adult and is doing so very rapidly. One area accelerating is in education and finding ways to leverage the cloud (and an explosion in internet connectivity globally) in new and exciting ways. One such organization is Sophia and our show guest is Taylor Pettis, Manager of marketing communications at Sophia Learning. Taylor talks about their non and for profit adventure, how they’re redefining education, and leveraging the ‘net for crowdsourced course development in fundamentally new and innovative ways.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil “Philly Idol” Wilson.

TST Media Takes Top Honors at Web Challenge

March 27, 2011 By Phil Wilson

After 24 hours of meeting, planning coding, creating, and general all around geeky fun, TST Media was selected as the winner of the Nerdery’s annual Overnight Website Challenge. Built on their NGIN platform, currently finding great success with organizations big and small, the Bloomington United for Youth (BUY) site is already live.

We’re also happy to report that our very own Tim Elliott and his band of WordPress fanatics on the Full Court WordPress team brought in a site that made it to the final four. The site for Project 515 should be live later this week.

The judges for the event, represented by their obvious well-rested appearance in a see of sleepy, were Christine Durand, communication director, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, Christian Erickson, principal, Zeus Jones, Dan Grigsby, founder, Drivetrain, and Dana Nelson, executive director, GiveMN.org

As noted by the Nerdery, “No team lost anything but sleep while 18 nonprofit organizations won free websites that will better carry their mission forward.” We’re sure that none of the teams in the multiple rooms that house the now ginormous Challenge, would disagree.

Minnesota ‘Brand Storyteller’ Changes Name to Brandpoint

March 14, 2011 By Graeme Thickins

Hopkins-based ARAcontent, which has been a leader in content-based marketing solutions for more than 15 years, announced today it has changed its name to Brandpoint, underscoring the organization’s evolution from a provider of traditional PR brand storytelling into a comprehensive, content-based digital marketing platform.

Brandpoint offers three core product channels, each enhanced by accurate, real-time reporting of results:

• Media creation and distribution: Consumer-focused feature articles help clients tell their brand stories, and provide high-quality content to a network of online publishers. Brandpoint guarantees clients online placement of their articles through its powerful, cost-effective media creation and distribution service.

• Search engine optimization (SEO): Brandpoint provides full SEO consulting services that range from website audits to keyword analysis. Placement of quality content on trusted media websites is an effective way for brands to increase their SEO relevancy.

• Social media: Brandpoint supports clients’ social media strategies with outreach tools and writing services that help brands maintain and grow their social media presence.

“Changing our name to Brandpoint reflects how our business has evolved from a heritage of print article distribution into a comprehensive content-based digital marketing platform,” said David Olson, SVP and general manager of Brandpoint, in the company’s news announcemnet.  “As the online marketing landscape becomes more dynamic, consumers are connecting with each other and the companies they patronize in new and exciting ways. By following consumer trends and continually integrating new services such as social media and SEO, Brandpoint is nicely positioned to serve as our clients’ strategic partner today and in the future.”

The parent company of Brandpoint, and another product called Adfusion, is ARAnet. It is an article-based digital media company that educates consumers, builds brands, and drives sales through product offerings that focus on digital advertising, SEO, and public relations, and leverage content and technology to achieve clients’ specific campaign goals. The company began life 15 years ago as Article Resource Association, providing copyright-free content to print media across the country. As the digital marketing world evolved, the company maintained its front-runner position by developing new content-based marketing tools and utilizing emerging technologies for a broad portfolio of public relations industry, corporate, and interactive agency clients.

Contour Innovations Made GPS Magic in a Basement

February 25, 2011 By Steve Borsch

Two entrepreneur’s, Mike Lauenstein and Matt Johnson of Contour Innovations, have spent the last two years in stealth mode (building in Mike’s basement offices) inventing a patent pending technology that provides a unique sonar recorder Platform with a wide range of applications for recreational fishermen, research groups, fishing guides, and other geospatial technologies. When we grabbed coffee a few days ago so Mike and Matt could give me an overview, I tossed out ideas and thoughts that were possibilities that were obviously a Phase 2 or 3 for a startup…

…but to my surprise these guys have nailed every single one and then some.

The "CI Device"

The premise and “magic” is this: by building what they call a “CI Device” that connects between any existing depth finder and its transducer to “sniff” and record raw sonar files, they can match those files with their corresponding GPS locations. This data is then uploaded to their servers where it is processed and rendered in various online interactive media and coupled with weather data and other conditions. The processed lake data is accessible by the user’s account and displayed in lake shape files (on smartphones, computers, etc.).

The cool thing? If you’re a guide you can now map a lake, put in your preferred fishing holes and sell the “package” of data. A fisherman could then go to that lake and essentially be guided to great fishing holes by top guides.  …  [Read More…]

MHTA Welcomes New President and CEO

January 27, 2011 By Phil Wilson

The Dorsey Whitney law firm hosted a meet and greet to welcome incoming Minnesota High Tech Association President and CEO Margaret Anderson Kelliher. If attendees were looking for specifics on how her leadership will impact the organization in the future, they were disappointed…and probably expecting too much.  This was clearly more of a get acquainted gathering.

While chatting in the receiving line she told me that, like many stepping into a new role, the first order of business was strategic planning for the organization, something that hadn’t been seriously undertaken in quite some time.

Noting the inclusion of innovation and building for the future in President Obama’s State of the Union address, Ms Kelliher talked briefly about the MHTA’s dedication to creating high tech jobs and the association’s STEM Education Initiatives.

Summit Showcases Senator’s Innovation Agenda

January 19, 2011 By Phil Wilson

Senator Amy Klobuchar was in Minneapolis for what was billed as an Innovation Summit at the University of Minnesota on Tuesday. According to the Senator’s office, the summit was an opportunity to share information about how the public and private sectors can team up to strengthen the economy by revitalizing American innovation and promoting products abroad.

Senator Klobuchar also used the occasion to outline what was termed as a comprehensive package of legislation she will introduce to strengthen America’s ability to innovate and compete for long-term economic growth and job creation. (As of this writing, no specifics of that package have been provided by the Senator’s office.)

In the short term, Klobuchar said, “We need to deliver a series of targeted tax breaks and regulatory reforms designed to galvanize the private sector and unleash a fresh wave of invention, entrepreneurship, and exports.”

In the long term, she added, “We need to help secure our standing in the global economy, lay the groundwork for future innovation by improving science, technology, engineering, and math education; cut red tape; and increase the ability of our businesses to attract and retain the world’s brightest scientists, engineers, and researchers.”

We look forward to hearing more specifics from the Senator and applaud her efforts to re-energize innovation nationally and can think of no better place than Minnesota from which to start.

Minnedemo Screams Diverse Developer Community

January 14, 2011 By Phil Wilson

The folks at Minne* put on another solid showcase of Minnesota innovation at the latest Minnedemo on Thursday night. Ben Edwards, Luke Francl and the latest addition to the team, Adrienne Peirce, kicked off the event with the promise of  “a Minnedemo in the spring and another couple Minnedemos” this year. There was even talk of moving beyond the friendly confines of the Twin Cities and staging an event in St. Cloud. For my part, I would have loved to hear more about the goals of both Minnedemo and Minne*. While I and many familiar faces in the room know what they are, I hate to see anyone miss an opportunity to really showcase the noble efforts of the organization.

As for the presenters and demos at the event, the evening highlighted applications, services, and hardware that catered to a wide range of interests. From gamers to writers, security to slap shots the evening moved along at a brisk pace leaving plenty of time for socializing and networking out side the presentation space at the St. Thomas’ Schultz Hall.

Some of the standouts included…

Inveni-I’ve followed the development of Aaron Weber’s discovery and recommendation engine for quite some time and it didn’t fail to impress. Entertainment (Movies, TV) is the sweet spot for Inveni right now and offers the ability to share your highly personalized Inveni picks with your network. Now if Aaron could only get Netflix to secure a better class of streaming selections…

Zipnosis-With the promise of a diagnosis in minutes for just $25, Zipnosis was perhaps the most polished demo of the evening. We’ve showcased Zipnosis and are big fans. I also found the theme of the demo, providing low-cost healthcare, interesting. Zipnosis clearly wants to move past the tech and on to the benefits….  [Read More…]
