Panel members:

  • Jason DeRusha (@DeRushaJ), investigative reporter, WCCO-TV
  • David Brauer (@dbrauer), media reporter, MinnPost.com
  • Gene Rebeck (@generebeck), senior editor, Twin Cities Business Magazine
  • Julia Schrenkler (@juliaschrenkler), interactive producer, Minnesota Public Radio
  • Dirk DeYoung (@ddeyoung), editor, Business Journal

We were fortunate that the SMBMSP facility host, Summit Brewing Company, provided us with a boardroom to record in after the panel discussion and, though the room had a bit of an echo, we were able to get in a solid podcast with Julio and David Brauer joining us for a continuation of the discussion about journalism and social media.

Minnov8 Gang Podcast 55: The Connected & Social Library

October 17, 2009 By Steve Borsch

meg

Libraries used to be places to go solely to find information and knowledge in containers called “books” that were comprised of “atoms” and organized by Melvil Dewey’s cool Decimal System, but increasingly library systems are morphing in to places to get connected online where patrons can find their information and knowledge in “bits” while interacting with the library in an increasingly virtual and — most intriguingly in today’s participation culture — in an online and interactively social way.

The Gang had a chance to invite Meg Canada on the podcast to talk about the 21st century library, what our biggest Minnesota library system is doing (and what she’s driving within it) to embrace new realities that are internet-centric and deliver a surprising array of services you may not know even exist. Meg has long impressed us with how much she “gets it” with respect to new media and social technologies, but have been quite delighted to see how much of her energy is invested in the social and internet community in Minnesota and the role she plays in nurturing it along with good humor and an eagerness to serve others.

Meg is a senior librarian for Web Services and Training at Hennepin County Library and currently coordinates public training and social media efforts for the library. She volunteers helping with the Unsummit, recently presented at MinneWebCon, and is a regular contributor to Social Media Breakfast. Had we known beforehand that she also sings regularly with the Twin Cities chapter of TechKaraoke, we would’ve had her croak out an Etta James tune or something. We’ll get her on another podcast soon and have her sing.

This Week’s Show Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.
Opening & closing music is “38 Special” by Charlie Musselwhite (iTunes link) from Music Alley, purveyor of podsafe tunes.

Minnov8 Gang Podcast 54: Live from #UnSummit ’09

October 10, 2009 By Steve Borsch

M8_Gang_Unsummit

The Minnov8 Gang was delighted to report on, and be a part of, the UnSummit ’09 unconference, held today at the incredible facility at the Hennepin County Central Library in downtown Minneapolis. Hats off to Meg Canada, Don Ball and Mykl Roventine — as well as all of the sponsors — who made it such a great event. We did some light liveblogging which you can see on this page.

We were pleased to have a slot to record our first live version of the Minnov8 Gang podcast. Hosts today were Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott and Phil Wilson (Graeme Thickins is up north searching for colder weather, we presume).

Minnov8 Gang #53: A Chat with Mark Kurtz

October 3, 2009 By Steve Borsch

markkurtzThe Gang talks with Mark Kurtz, Chief Growth Officer and VP of New Media at Gage where he’s responsible for strategy, execution, and revenue measurement of digital media experiences across a Fortune 500 client base. Mark has held senior marketing roles across technology and ad agencies in Australia, Asia, and the US. We talk about social media, online promotion, blogger relations/PR, and other cool stuff.

(Steve Note: I apologize for the atypically crappy audio quality on this week’s show. Recorded at home where we just remodeled our lower level, it turns out that (unbeknownst to me) the electrician had re-routed my cable connection through three splitters and my 16mbps download speed dropped to 700kbps, barely enough to record a group podcast. In turn, Skype also dumbed its quality down to manage the paltry bandwidth).

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.
Music: Bob Kirkpatrick from Music Alley, purveyor of podsafe tunes.

Minnov8 Gang 52: It’s RAINing Money!

September 25, 2009 By Steve Borsch

RAIN

This week saw Graeme Thickins liveblogging DEMO Fall 2009, Tim Elliott off to California on client adventures, while Phil Wilson and Steve Borsch attended the Social Media Breakfast #19.

In between all of this activity, Graeme and Steve covered the 6th Annual RAIN Makers Conference put on by RAIN Source Capital. The RAIN Makers is a multi-state network of RAIN® funds that works with angel investors who are interested in supporting growing companies. RAIN Source® helps bring together like-minded angel investors to form individual RAIN funds ~ and then provides these funds with a process for due diligence, legal templates, management support, access to deal flow and other resources.

These RAIN funds share expertise, deals and experience between and among RAIN Source Capital’s multi-state network to support growing companies throughout the area. The conference is a chance to get together and look at startups who might be good candidates for syndicated investments shared within the RAIN group as well as to discuss pertinent items that affect all the funds participating in the RAIN network.

Graeme starts off with an interview with RAIN principal Brian Johnson, and then he and Steve interview four up-n-comers showcasing their products to the investors in attendance:

  • Flyspy
  • Ntractive
  • HomeStream (temporary site)
  • Declarix

DISCLAIMER: Though she’s an avid listener to the podcast, the woman in the photo above is delighted the economy is turning around and is NOT gazing in awe at, or worshipping, the Minnov8 Gang.

Minnov8 Gang Celebrates Labor

September 4, 2009 By Steve Borsch

blacksmithThe Minnov8 Gang will be off this weekend celebrating labor, though as I write those words to announce we’re not doing a podcast this Labor Day weekend I’m struck by how the nature of labor has changed over the last 100+ years.

The man in front in the photo above is my maternal great grandfather, a man I never knew but heard stories about while growing up. He was apparently an incredibly strong and tough guy who ran a blacksmith shop in Tioga, North Dakota, raised eight kids with my great grandma, and was known widely for being able to toss anvils great distances (probably loads of fun in Tioga back then).

This photo, by the way, was taken by an early technology adopter guy out of Minot, ND in the early 1890’s who’d embraced this new thing called “photography”.

When I think about the sort of labor people of this generation had to go through to eke out a living, keep food on the table, stave off illness, keep a house up with clothes washed and food canned for an upcoming North Dakota winter in a barren, flat land…THAT is the sort of labor worth celebrating and is what I sometimes think about when I’m doing my “knowledge work” every day and getting ready for the evening Eden Prairie anvil tossing competition.  😉

Have a great weekend.
