Minnov8 Gang 380 – IoT’s Yin & Yang

October 22, 2016 By Steve Borsch

yin-yang_mainIn Chinese philosophy and religion there are two principles, one negative, dark, and feminine (yin) and one positive, bright, and masculine (yang) whose interaction influences the destinies of creatures and things. This week we experienced both with the Internet of Things (IoT): The massive distributed denial of service on Friday was definitely ‘yin’ and today’s IoTHackday was definitely a positive and bright ‘yang’.

Hosts: Steve Borsch and Phil Wilson (Tim Elliott is off this week)

Minnov8 Gang 379 – Hacking the Internet of Things

October 15, 2016 By Steve Borsch

iothackday_mainOne of the most interesting Internet of Things (IoT) events of the year is IoTHackday, a fun, FREE day that brings together teams, novel ideas, and an entrepreneurial spirit to dream up and build cool new devices to solve everyday problems.

Teams form, submit their ideas ahead of the event, and hack for 12 hours. The public is invited to attend at the end of the day at 8pm, vote for their favorite teams. Top teams receive hardware and prizes!

Justin Grammens is our guest this week (see profile below) and he tells all about IoTHackday, an event started with Patrick Delaney, and one you will definitely want to attend.

Minnov8 Gang 377 – Don’t Hire Me Bro!

October 1, 2016 By Steve Borsch

dont-hire-me-bro_mainYou may remember the protestor at Secretary John Kerry’s talk at U of Florida and that guy wouldn’t leave so the cops Tased him as he yelled out, “Don’t tase me, bro!!” The video of the guy screaming that out became an internet meme in 2007 and so it was the first thing that came to mind when we discussed one of our first Minnesota tech stories called High-tech Talent Grab. The focus of the story was about Twin Cities companies essentially being raided for their tech talent.

But is that apparent tech-talent-raiding a good thing or a bad one? Is it really happening? Find out what’s really going on in this week’s show.

Minnov8 Gang 373 – Smooth, Sexy & Social

August 27, 2016 By Steve Borsch

phil-bf-main

Photo credit: Nancy Kuehn for MSPBJ

Our own Phil Wilson has a profile story by Katharine Grayson in this past week’s Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Titled Face Time: BuzzFeed General Manager Phil Wilson, the story requires a subscription to MSPBJ, but Phil gives an overview of what’s in it and it’s a nice introductory piece of Phil in MSPBJ’s “Face Time” series.

Tim and I were a bit disappointed after seeing MSPBJ photographer Nancy Kuehn‘s photo for the story. We both thought that Katharine didn’t title it correctly and it should have been: Face Time: BuzzFeed GM Phil Wilson is Smooth, Sexy & Social. Perhaps a followup story will probe Phil’s smooth, sexy, social persona.

Minnov8 Gang 372 – The Zamfir Fanboy

August 20, 2016 By Steve Borsch

zamfir-tim-mainBefore we started the show we were talking about our kids and I mentioned playing Raffi for my daughter (over-and-over-and-over again!). But it wasn’t until this show that Phil and I learned that Tim has been a closeted fanboy of the pan flute master, Zamfir. How could we have known? We didn’t ask, but probably should have found out if Tim runs this video’s audio on an endless loop during his workday.*

*You’ll have to listen to the show to find out if Tim is actually a fanboy, or is being tweaked.

Minnov8 Gang 371 – The Poopening

August 13, 2016 By Steve Borsch

doggie_mainAn amusing story went viral this past week from a guy whose dog left his “deposit” on the floor one evening and later, when this guy’s Roomba scooted around the apartment doing it’s vacuuming job, it smeared the deposit everywhere! This story was Phil’s “Cool Thing of the Week” and he links below to the original Facebook story so you can read this guy’s horrific account for yourself.

NOTE: Save for that one story, we take the ‘high road’ on the rest of the podcast and talk about important tech stuff. 😉
