We also mention MinneDemo Rochester and Sprint’s new suitor before talking about new and rumored Apple products.

Minnov8 Gang 186 – Tim Brunelle on the Summit

October 5, 2012 By Steve Borsch

Minnesota technology stories are flowing and we discuss several of them on this week’s show. The biggest story for next week will certainly come from the world-class Minnesota Interactive Media Association (MIMA) Summit happening next Wednesday. To discuss that event — and why it has been so fabulous in the past and is shaping up to be even better for the upcoming one — is none other than MIMA board president Tim Brunelle (site; LinkedIn; Twitter). Tim is one accomplished guy who has developed brand strategies, directed films, written and directed advertising and design, and user experience for huge brands (but as far as we know he actually doesn’t climb mountains).

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.
Music: Some royalty-free music Borsch bought and everyone hates.

Minnov8 Gang 182 – Balloons Not Included

September 7, 2012 By Steve Borsch

We all know design matters. The greatest software is pretty much useless if the human interface is confusing and inefficient. Same thing with hardware. But with the advent of indie capital raising sites like Kickstarter, it’s easier then ever to have a great idea, design it so it’s highly desirable, and then get the project funded. That’s exactly what our guest this week, Tom Gerhardt (his site; his studio) and did with his pal, Dan Provost (Twitter; TheVerge article).  Take a peek at this post on BoingBoing about their adventure together.

Read Graeme Thickins’ post here about Tom and Dan speaking on “Indie Capitalism & Design Entrepreneurship” for the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD) “Visiting Artist Lecture” series.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson
Music: Mandolin Boogie by Johnny Nicholas from the podsafe Music Alley.

Minnov8 Gang 166 – Print Me Some Coffee

April 28, 2012 By Steve Borsch

The Gang discusses events this past week, including the Twin Cities debut of a new, consumer-grade 3D printing device called the Cube from Cubify. Having been fans of Star Trek in its various incarnations, many 3D printing enthusiasts have a vision for these sorts of printers that is more Star Trek replicator than what they presently deliver: prototypes and trinkets.

Minnov8 Gang 69: “We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!”

March 6, 2010 By Steve Borsch

Opportunity and growth is all around us and glimmers of it are appearing in the web, mobile and other tech spaces. But are you willing to take the risks, explore and deal with all the obstacles in the way of you seeking riches?

In the movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Humphrey Bogart’s character Dobbs, and two other gringos, embark in to Mexico to find gold in the Sierra Madres, an area in great flux and riddled with banditos, but policed by the Federales. In one of the signature lines in the movie the banditos, trying to convince Dobbs and his cronies that they’re Federales, say, “Badges? We ain’t got no badges! We don’t need no badges! I don’t have to show you any stinking badges!” (usually misquoted as “We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!“). There are several moral and philosophical questions in the movie and Dobbs dies, the banditos are killed by the Federales, the gold is lost and thus the analogy might as clear as mud: chasing opportunities won’t be easy but they’re out there; barriers and obstacles (and bandits) stand in your way; but we thought exploring opportunistic thoughts in this podcast was worthwhile.

Special Guest: For part of the podcast, Meg Canada joins us to talk about libraries, the iPad and more. Meg is a senior librarian for Web Services and Training at Hennepin County Library and currently coordinates public training and  social media efforts for the library. She volunteers helping with the Unsummit, recently presented at MinneWebCon, and is a regular contributor to Social Media Breakfast.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.
Music: “Santa Maria” by Will Kriski from Music Alley, purveyor of podsafe tunes.

Was Unsummit Perfect?

October 15, 2009 By Phil Wilson

From the comments in our usual post event video, you would have to believe that the recent Unsummit was an example of pure perfection in conference land. In reality, there very well may be some issues that founder Don Ball and organizers Mykl Roventine and Meg Canada should address…but damned if I know what they are.

unsummit3_logoOK, there is one comment I heard; “It’s not really an unconference.” True, the ‘un’ in ‘unconference’ might denote that there is no set agenda, that the space is provided and the topics are decided upon by those who show up. This style of meeting has spawned many a BarCamp like event, our own Minnebar to comes to mind.

However, as it pertains to UnSummit, the ‘un’ is a hold over from the inaugural event last year. Don Ball, not able to secure a ticket to the always popular MIMA Summit, decided to host a gathering of those interested in Interactive and Marketing who, like him, either couldn’t get a ticket or didn’t want to pay the relatively spendy ticket price. Hence, being held at the very same, the UnSummit was born.

It should be noted that, at it’s even loftier price, MIMA attracted 1000 folks to it’s recent 2009 Summit…and despite a few exceptions was well worth the price. It should also be noted that what little competition between the MIMA Summit and the UnSummit that might have existed in the very beginning, or perception of such, has long since disappeared. At least it should have. So while the UnSummit does borrow from the unconference concept in it’s presentation, it is really ‘un’ in name only.

OK, so next time perhaps there can be a few more open times and rooms to build some sessions on the fly.

No matter the format, the UnSummit was about bringing together close to 200 hundred interactive enthusiasts on a Saturday to learn from each other and discuss the future of the interactive and online world in a relaxed environment. From my standpoint, at the end of that day, that’s what everyone walked away with. But don’t just take my word for it…
