Minnov8 Gang is on Spring Break!
The Minnov8 Gang will be off this week and most likely next week too, returning with an all new show on April 5th. In the meantime, have a peek at this video of Phil Wilson on a spring break from the past:
SmartThings Founder Sees Limitless IoT
SmartThings CEO Alex Hawkinson was at the Washington Post’s “All Things Connected” forum and had a chance to demo the app and some ‘things’ this past week. He joined Senator Richard Blumenthal, FTC Commissioner Maureen K. Ohlhausen, and a host of other entrepreneurs at the Washington Post’s forum on Tuesday in Washington, DC.
SmartThings’ blog called ReImagine Real wrote up this post on the event and shot this brief video about Hawkinson’s demo:
As a quick sidenote, Computerworld had this great writeup on the genesis of SmartThings and what compelled Hawkinson to get involved in, what promises to be, the next great adventure in technology: the Internet of Things.

Nationally-renowned Invention Expo 2014 Announces Call for Exhibitors
The Minnesota Inventors Congress Invention Expo 2014 connects inventors
with industry experts and resources, provides market exposure for new products
REDWOOD FALLS, Minn. (March 24, 2014) – The Minnesota Inventors Congress today announced a call for exhibitors at Invention Expo 2014 onMay 2-3, 2014, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The Invention Expo 2014 provides an exciting venue for inventors from Minnesota and beyond to introduce their products to new customers, learn from industry experts and connect with potential investors. The early deadline for exhibitor submissions is April 4, 2014, and the final deadline is April 25, 2014.
“The annual Invention Expo connects exhibiting inventors with the best resources to help them get their products to market – from experts on intellectual property and patents, to authorities on funding, manufacturing and licensing, and new customers for market testing and word-of-mouth promotion,” says Doug Reuter, past Invention Expo exhibitor and inventor of SEQUENCE® and QB8™. “Exhibiting at Invention Expo is one of the most valuable commitments that inventors can make.”
Thousands of inventors from across the nation have participated in the Invention Expo since it was established by the nonprofit Minnesota Inventors Congress in 1958. The 2014 event format includes a combination of booth displays for exhibitor inventions and scheduled Inventing Success Workshops designed to teach inventors and attendees how to successfully develop and market their products.
In addition to exposure and networking, Invention Expo 2014 exhibitors are eligible to compete in several product invention awards, including the F. Robert Starr Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Maynard Speece Memorial. Exhibitors will also be given priority status for a “Pitch the Experts” panel, designed to give 30 inventors the opportunity to practice their pitch and gather feedback on their products from national product scouts – and potentially secure licensing opportunities.
Cost for exhibiting at Invention Expo 2014 is $595 before April 4, and $695 thereafter. For more information about exhibitor requirements and registration deadlines, or to complete an online registration form, visit www.

Minnov8 Gang 258 – What Was *Your* First Tweet?
Twitter came out with a new search service this week and it enables you to view your first tweet…or the first tweet of anyone else’s Twitter handle you’d like to input. Fun stuff but when Twitter was first launched really took off in early 2007, the four of us had the same initial reaction as old Ed in the photo above: What the heck is this Twitter thing?
Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.

Minnov8 Gang 257 – Seriously? Uri the Spoonbender?
In the usual flood of technology stories was one that stunned all four of us: Psychic Uri Geller has been called on to help find Malaysia Airlines plane by “significant figure”. With Geller’s claim to fame being spoonbending—along with his assertions that his psychic paranormal powers may have been given to him by extraterrestrials—it is hard to fathom him being connected to the Malaysian airliner search in any way.
We dispense with the Uri the Spoonbender crap quickly and then cut-to-the-chase with technology stories.

Geekettes Launches Twin Cities Chapter
As the father of a smart and accomplished young woman who is also very tech-savvy, I’ve seen first-hand what it means to a young woman when technology is a strength. As an always on and always connected person who “gets it”, this strength has accelerated her learning, her career, as well as her overall engagement as she uses her skills and abilities to collaborate, adapt and create.
She most likely doesn’t yet know that Geekettes is launching a local Twin Cities chapter but I’m going to send her this post. Geekettes is a community of female founders, engineers, designers, businesspersons, entrepreneurs, investors and communications specialists supporting each other in following dreams and achieving success. This is a group that welcomes all women from different backgrounds of the tech industry to participate. Fortunately they also welcome men to join them and engage in the discussion, but they probably don’t need us hangin’ around!
The objective with the new Twin Cities Geekettes chapter? To plan and organize regular inspiring workshops, events, hackathons, mini-conferences and mentorship programs where every woman and girl leaves feeling like they connected with and felt supported by other members of their community and learned something new.
The Geekettes have gone global in a big way across Europe and America, connecting Berlin, Hamburg, New York, London, Portugal and Maastricht. The brand new Twin Cities chapter is holding their Launch Party on Friday, March 14, 2014 at the University of Minnesota Kenneth H. Keller Hall.
It’s a free event but they can only hold 130 people so register right away or let the geekette in your life know about it immediately. Best Buy’s CFO and CAO Sharon McCollam and BMC’s Katie Tierney will be the speakers. More information and to register can be found here and their press release is below.
Geekettes Launches Global Chapters To
Expand Efforts to Support Women in Tech
Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 1, 2014 – Geekettes, an organization offering a platform for aspiring and current women innovators in technology, today announced its first expansion to support, foster and create opportunities for burgeoning female entrepreneurs, engineers and designers across Europe and into the United States.
In an effort to promote women in technology and gain access to all insights and experiences of women, Geekettes will invest in programs that will foster new opportunities, innovation, job creation, startup support and inspiration for the next generation of ladies to enter the fast growing tech industry.
“Geekettes’ purpose resonates across the globe. With this in mind, additional chapters of the Geekettes movement will be created in other tech hotspots around the globe,” said Jess Erickson, Founder of Geekettes. “As your community grows, your organization should grow too. That’s why we’re thrilled to launch the next Geekettes chapter into NYC, London, Lisbon, Porto, Maastricht, and Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St.Paul) with current hubs in Berlin and Hamburg.” Denise Philipp, Co-Founder of Geekettes adds that, “Our aim is to connect women across different countries and inspire the next generation of ladies to get excited about careers in technology.”
Technology is pushing innovation in many different sectors across the globe. The Geekettes believe that there should be greater proportion of women in the creation and decision-making process on all fronts: from investing to mastering code to jumpstarting one’s own business. This global expansion will focus on empowering women by providing them with resources and tools to achieve their goals while connecting them across various global cities. In addition, it will focus on inspiring the next generation of women to join in on a rapidly expanding global technology community.
The expansion into these new cities will deepen the footprint and awareness for women and the opportunities that exist within a growing community.
About the Geekettes Twin Cities launch: We have creative, innovative minds here in Minnesota. There’s a thriving and quickly growing tech and startup scene with a vibrant community. Along with standout startups, the world’s largest electronics retailer, Best Buy, 3M and several medical technology companies call the Twin Cities home. The passionate and talented women of Minnesota are ready to build a platform for women interested and involved in the tech and startup scene. “It’s an exciting time to be a woman in this industry and inspire the next generation to learn more. Seeing my 10 year old daughter’s increasing interest in coding reminds me of the importance of what this organization does. I’m thrilled to be involved in a proven network where women support each other in following dreams and achieving success,” said Sara Heitkamp, Co-Ambassador of the Twin Cities Geekettes.
——————–
The Twin Cities Geekettes programs will officially launch this March with a kickoff event sponsored by The University of Minnesota, Valere and Best Buy at the University of Minnesota campus. This event is open to interested women who’d like to join the community and men who want to join the discussion.

We have much to discuss this week but probably the biggest story is the meltdown of Mt. Gox, the Bitcoin exchange, and its loss of nearly half a billion dollars in Bitcoins. So should you invest or mine Bitcoins? Would you put your 401k in to one? Would it be safer to shop with Bitcoins than using a credit card at Target?
