We Received SmartThings Kits Last Night

March 8, 2013 By Steve Borsch

SmartThings logoLast evening about two dozen people showed up at the SmartThings office. It was the first rollout of ‘kits’ we’d pre-ordered through their Kickstarter funding adventure and I was pleased to have been chosen to attend and get my kit, even though I’m not a developer.

A typical SmartThings kit contains a hub you plug in to the internet and a smartphone app to control the hub. Then you set up sensors for open/close, presence, switches and more. Developers create apps that deliver multiple-sensor functionality—and these SmartApps are downloadable from within the smartphone app—and SmartThings has built a developer kit to spark the building of apps for all sorts of markets and applications. Fortunately SmartThings also embraces and supports open standards and protocols, so they’ll work with damn near everything made and this preliminary list of compatible devices, out of the 900 or so already on the market, will give you an idea of how expandable and scalable this smart platform truly is and why you’ll want it.

The opportunity for SmartThings is SO crystal clear that I’m really excited for them and what I am certain will be resounding success. They have first-mover-advantage, lots of buzz, good funding, retailers highly interested, and listening to CEO Alex Hawkinson and CTO Jeff Hagins (team here) last night my belief deepened that they already have an amazing start toward making their developer platform a reality.

In my opinion SmartThings is home automation finally done right. It is more affordable than anything else I’ve ever seen on the market. Not only did these guys blow past their Kickstarter.com initial funding (tried to raise $250k and got over $1.3M in 30 days) they’ve also recently raised a $3M seed round of capital. Plus, their over 5,000 ‘backers’ on Kickstarter read like a whos-who of technology leaders and the buzz about them is incredible.

Last night I picked up my SmartThings ‘kit’ at their offices at an event for early, early adopters and developers. As you probably know by now, SmartThings contains a hub you plug in to your internet hub or switch and then use a smartphone app to control the hub. Then you set up sensors for open/close, presence, switches and more. The team, and a few developers, have already created some ‘SmartApps’ to download. This sort of surprised me, but after installing my SmartThings hub and sensors last night I realized that I want to immediately buy more! I’ve already scoped out what I intend to buy:

  • 6-10 smart outlets (probably from GE and $40 or so apiece)
  • At least 6 smart switches (probably from GE and also $40 or so apiece)
  • Probably 3-4 Spark sockets that will let me turn on lighting turn on and do so by time (about $50 apiece)
  • Schlage Deadbolt lock that uses either a key, a code, or is controllable within the SmartThings app (about $170).

So my initial $300 ‘investment’ in my SmartThings kit will grow to more than $1,000+ and that’s just the beginning!

Here is a post and interview I did with co-founder Ben Edwards last August (and released it the day their Kickstarter campaign debuted) as well as YouTube videos like this series of SmartThings YouTube videos if you’d like to see more.

Minnov8 Gang 206 – Shake It Like a Polaroid Picture

March 2, 2013 By Steve Borsch

When the group ‘Outkast’ delivered the line in their song “Hey Ya!” encouraging women on the dance floor to, “shake it like a Polaroid picture“—a reference to an old technique used by some photographers to dry the wet Polaroid film by shaking the picture helped it to dry faster—Polaroid put out a press release asking people NOT to wave around today’s Polaroid pictures since they didn’t need to dry them like that anymore.

We sure don’t have to deal with instant photo prints anymore, heh? On this podcast we talk about today’s Polaroid and lament (a bit) the passing of what one of us described as “the Apple of the 1970s”. But since we have on Julio Ojeda-Zapata, the show is quite upbeat as we talk about the latest-and-greatest technologies and hear from a guy who gets to play with most of them before he writes his articles for TwinCities.com on his tech blog or for the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins, Phil Wilson and Julio-Ojeda Zapata.
Music: My Baby Up and Left Me by The Blues Vultures. From the podsafe Music Alley.

WordPress Launches Classroom Sites

February 21, 2013 By Steve Borsch

wp-education

Educators have another option for classroom sites and blogs, “WordPress is an elegant solution for education professionals looking to create a website for their class, and today we’re excited to announce the launch of WordPress.com Classrooms. Whether you need a group blog for your high school history project, or to keep your 3rd grade students’ parents up to date about the next field trip, you’ll find the solution here at WordPress.com.”

There really isn’t any excuse anymore for districts, schools and classroom teachers to not embrace online publishing!

Though the WordPress offering looks like a solid initiative, not everyone is happy about the launch or think it’s worthy. James Farmer, the founder & CEO of Edublogs (1.6 million+ teacher/classroom blogs) wrote a pretty scathing post (Why WordPress.com for education (and portfolios, restaurants & musicians) is a big fat fail) about WordPress’ offering calling it, “…shallow, insincere, cynical, lacking in focus and flimsy” and that’s just for starters! It’s quite a rant and uncalled for in my opinion.

While I also view WordPress.com’s various vertical initiatives as middle-of-the-road and not feature rich, there’s something to be said for legitimizing various verticals: it makes the category more viable and investors sit up and take notice. Going after the education space is being driven by those who should know best about viable verticals for WordPress, Automattic (WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg’s company that manages the open source WordPress software, runs WordPress.com along with many other initiatives & technologies). That alone is good news in my book.

kidblog-logoThe other good news? Minnesota has a fabulous solution, accelerating nationwide, right here in our own backyard: Kidblog. The Kidblog team is quite passionate about their mission too, “Kidblog is built by teachers, for teachers, so students can get the most out of the writing process. Our mission is to empower teachers to embrace the benefits of the coming digital revolution in education. As students become creators – not just consumers – of information, we recognize the crucial role of teachers as discussion moderators and content curators in the classroom. With Kidblog, teachers monitor and control all activity within their classroom blogging community.”

Bottom line? Having WordPress.com enter the education is great news for schools and sharpens the competitive differentiators of Kidblog and Edublogs. If you’re in education, or know someone who is, give them a heads-up that this is available and that they have options with Kidblog and Edublogs too.

Minnov8 Gang 204 – No Signal in the Big House

February 16, 2013 By Steve Borsch

Minnov8 Gang Podcast #204

Changing one’s profile picture anywhere invites Photoshopping abuse and Phil Wilson defaces Steve’s new profile pic. He is, of course, kindly returning the ‘favor’ of Steve basically defacing just about any image of Phil he can find, including a cheesy attempt at humor with this video.

Thankfully we goof off a bit but get in to some serious discussions about tech and innovation moves going on this past week.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.
Music: Spy Smasher by The High Fidelics. From the podsafe Music Alley.
