Minnov8 Gang Podcast – Episode 28

March 8, 2009 By Steve Borsch

unsummit-unpanelThree of the Gang were at the Unsummit (the fourth, Graeme Thickins, is still out in California after doing DEMO ’09…check out his phenomenal coverage of DEMO in his audio interviews here).

Unsummit is an unconference held Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the fabulous facility for meetings housed within the Minneapolis Central Library in downtown Minneapolis. One of us (Steve Borsch) was on the “Unpanel” session with Unsummit organizers Don Ball and Meg Canada, kickstarting a discussion on, “How can we use creativity + collaboration to beat the economic downturn.” Introduction of the panel done by Mykl Roventine, co-organizer of the Unsummit.

This week’s Gang podcast is a recording of that panel.

Sierra Bravo’s Overnight Website Challenge again gathers ten teams of volunteer web pros to create free websites for ten nonprofits. Last time they dropped the F-word (free free free) they had more takers than they could handle.

Minnov8 Gang Podcast – Episode 26

February 21, 2009 By Steve Borsch

tjkudalisVideo. It’s the hot thing but most users seem to be seeing it as just another data type to be delivered for free and at low cost. Once most of us master deploying on-demand video on our personal or company website, blog or even with screencasts for training purposes, the inevitable next thing many of us do is to explore delivering live, streaming events.

The latter is a very different animal and the technical challenges, costs of bandwidth and ensuring your audience has a great experience isn’t for the faint of heart or dabbler. Our guest, TJ Kudalis, Senior Video Engineer from Internet Broadcasting Systems (IBS), is a guy involved in video delivery on the internet since its infancy, and is someone whose been in the trenches with his IBS team to deliver content after the 9/11 tragedies, to the 70+ local TV stations IBS supports, as the content feed for NBC’s Olympic coverage in 2006, and is someone who knows what’s possible, what the costs are like for bandwidth and, most importantly, has a solid handle on the trends in software, hardware and peer-to-peer video delivery.

B: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins (Phil Wilson is off this week).

Minnov8 Gang Podcast – Episode 25

February 14, 2009 By Steve Borsch

m8_25This Gang podcast is a short one with a focus on one, key thing startups need and care about: building awareness.

You’ve heard us talk many times about how the time of flux we’re living in has created new opportunities and that people are atypically open to listening to better, cheaper, faster or new ways of doing things. If your startup has one, how are you helping people know about it?

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.

Over-n-over again your Gang members run in to people seeking ways to make their processes more efficient, find cheaper or better ways to do something, but one thing is clear to us: people just don’t know what’s out there, what’s possible or — for the most part — that you or your startup even exist!

Minnov8 Gang Podcast – Episode 23

January 31, 2009 By Steve Borsch

m8-silverliningsThis Gang podcast is called “Silver Linings,” and we focus on good news, where your possibilities reside, how to create a different mindset and attitude about your current situation…and what action we all can take to move forward!!

One favorite meme about our current situation discussed is, “the world is undergoing an economic reboot”. In a nutshell, here’s our choice: Focus on the bad news, continued negative reports on poor economic indicators, and sit and do nothing (or continue on with business-as-usual as if nothing has happened). Or…look at this as an opportunity to grab market share, reinvent your business, or accelerate your startup.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.

Minnov8 Gang Podcast – Episode 22

Joining us on the podcast is a brand new Minnov8 contributor and participant, Gary Koelling, who is Senior Manager, Social Technology at Best Buy Inc. After interactions with Graeme Thickins — who isn’t bashful about promoting Minnov8 — Gary decided he’d like to create for Minnov8 and completed the form (hint: you could too!).

Gary is the founder of BlueShirtNation.com, Giftag.com and leads several social technology projects within Best Buy. He describes himself as a tinkerer, gadfly (and an aspiring iconoclast), reader, tryer (someone who tries), teacher and listener (with a fairly tuned bullshit meter). Due to the success of the efforts he’s involved in, and the high profile of our hometown consumer electronics retailing giant, Gary has been able to talk to lots of people and companies around the country about social media and social technology.

Our favorite quote about his speaking around the country from his LinkedIn profile? “I don’t know if it’s helping, but I enjoy it.” We sure think so since he’s in-the-game, taking risks, experimenting and driving towards high value outcomes for his employer.

LINKS
Here are links to sites, products or other resources discussed during the podcast:

  • Good economic news for MN tech firms in Q4 2008: MTS revs up 9%, EPS up 21% (view MTS “Test Suite“) and NVE up 24%, EPS up 44% (view NVE “Fun Facts” page)
  • Mashable article on 40 Best Twitter Brands and the People Behind Them (Scroll down to the “Retail” section)
  • Fortune Top 100 Best Places to Work: Mayo (24th) and General Mills (39th) as great places to work (via MNHeadhunter)
  • Forbes listing America’s Top Most Wired Cities: Minneapolis is #7 on the list
  • The (mostly mythological) “Osborne Effect” but is there some reality to it in an online world?
  • Macintosh image editors increasingly used by Tim Elliott: Acorn and Pixelmator
  • Gary headed to Etail in Phoenix and a Computerworld event (both he and his cohort and colleague, Steve Bendt)
  • EVENTS: Social Media Breakfast 1/30/09; Minnedemo (RSVP if you want to get in!) 2/6/09; Unsummit 3/7/09.

Minnov8 Gang Podcast – Episode 21

January 17, 2009 By Steve Borsch

pauldeb On this week’s show, the Gang talks with Paul DeBettignies, a Minnesota tech recruiter, about the state of job search, lots of tips and advice on networking, and about being in-the-game in social networking and why it’s so important in this tough economy.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.

Paul’s a job coach, mentor, and one of the most AWESOME social and physical networkers we’ve ever met! This guy is EVERYWHERE online: His blog; his brand new BeYourOwnHeadhunter blog (The idea behind the site is to have content on job search, webinars on the same with networking topics like creating/using LinkedIn, and a book for later this spring with information that because of time do not make it into a one hour presentation); LinkedIn profile; Social Media Breakfast; RecruitingBlogs, a social network he started as well as MinnesotaRecruiters; Twitter; and has given speeches and is in articles all over the place…amazing.

By the way, if you’re looking for a speaker on job search, networking or LinkedIn —  or are seeking a relationship-based recruiter to help with either IT placements or advice on employer branding, use of social media, etc. —  email Paul directly.

  • Paul mentioned JibberJobber.
