Minnov8 Gang 394 – Give Up Your Passwords at the U.S. Border

February 18, 2017 By Steve Borsch

Are you a U.S. citizen? Then you should know that, if you travel internationally, when you come back to the U.S. you may be forced to reveal your device passwords (e.g., smartphone, tablet, laptop) as well as providing U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers with passwords to your social media and other accounts.

Farfetched? Nope…read this article to get one tech guy’s perspective on what happened this past week to a NASA guy who is a U.S. citizen: I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again. Neither should you.

Update: Here is the Department of Homeland Security Privacy Impact Assessment for the Border Searches of Electronic Devices (PDF) which, by the way, has not been updated since 2009.

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott and Phil Wilson
Music: Hop Skip And A Jump by DJ Ecklectic Mick under a CC by 4.0 License

Minnov8 Gang 391 – You ARE Being Watched

January 21, 2017 By Steve Borsch

It is obvious to people who are aware of mass surveillance that we all are being watched. Anything digital is swept up, made Google-like searchable, connected to others and also events, regardless whether those connections are relevant or not.

We talk about our usual Minnesota tech stories but in our other top tech stories was one that caught our attention about Lavabit’s Ladar Levinson launching a new encrypted email service that is better than the original once used by Edward Snowden. Since email is usually core to how and what we communicate, obtain password resets, archive email attachments and much more that we want to keep secure from the government OR from companies that can scan our email (e.g., Google’s Gmail and Yahoo Mail), protecting our private and confidential communications is critical in this time of mass surveillance.

December 17, 2016 By Steve Borsch

Minnov8 Gang 372 – The Zamfir Fanboy

August 20, 2016 By Steve Borsch

zamfir-tim-mainBefore we started the show we were talking about our kids and I mentioned playing Raffi for my daughter (over-and-over-and-over again!). But it wasn’t until this show that Phil and I learned that Tim has been a closeted fanboy of the pan flute master, Zamfir. How could we have known? We didn’t ask, but probably should have found out if Tim runs this video’s audio on an endless loop during his workday.*

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott and Phil Wilson
Music: Bottle Blues by BASIL under a CC by 3.0 License

*You’ll have to listen to the show to find out if Tim is actually a fanboy, or is being tweaked.

July 23, 2016 By Steve Borsch

July 16, 2016 By Steve Borsch

Minnov8 Gang 362 – MN House Goes Crazy

May 14, 2016 By Steve Borsch

lets-go-crazy-mainLots of good tech stories to cover this week but we do dwell on one topic that surprised us. The Electronic Frontier Foundation reported this past week that “Minnesota Legislators Go Crazy, Pushing Dangerous PRINCE Act” which was also written about by dozens of other music sites and blogs. Fortunately the Minnesota Senate tabled the proposed bill (for now) but this sort of legislation attempt will bear watching.

Minnov8 Gang 358 – It’s an Eyesore

April 16, 2016 By Steve Borsch

ugly-building_mainThe StarTribune had an article about how as Code 42 heads downtown, 100 Washington Square becomes tech center. The good news? Growing tech companies have a large square-footage building that is catering to their needs. The bad news? Phil is NOT happy about it as he thinks the building is basically butt-ugly.

Minnov8 Gang 352 – Facebook Emojis: How does that make you feel?

February 27, 2016 By Steve Borsch

fb-reactions-mainOn the darker side, we discuss more about the unfolding FBI vs. Apple controversy and Borsch’s response to a StarTribune editorial in last Sunday’s paper. On the lighter side we talk a bit about the new response-to-a-post emojis at Facebook and we, like many others, either don’t care or want to know more about how Facebook will be using them (hint: Facebook confirmed to Mic in this posting that it will use data gathered when you use the new emojis to alter your News Feed and learn more about what you like).

Minnov8 Gang 351 – Encrypt Me

February 20, 2016 By Steve Borsch

encrypt-me-mainTHE big story of the week has to be the Apple/FBI dust-up over the court-order demanding Apple decrypt the iPhone 5c of the San Bernadino shooter. The three of us stand by Apple, who is pushing-back to NOT build a tool to decrypt that phone, all while the Dept. of Justice is now shoving to get Apple to comply. It’s complicated, but we talk about that—and a whole lot more—on this week’s show.
