Minnov8 Gang 391 – You ARE Being Watched

January 21, 2017 By Steve Borsch

It is obvious to people who are aware of mass surveillance that we all are being watched. Anything digital is swept up, made Google-like searchable, connected to others and also events, regardless whether those connections are relevant or not.

We talk about our usual Minnesota tech stories but in our other top tech stories was one that caught our attention about Lavabit’s Ladar Levinson launching a new encrypted email service that is better than the original once used by Edward Snowden. Since email is usually core to how and what we communicate, obtain password resets, archive email attachments and much more that we want to keep secure from the government OR from companies that can scan our email (e.g., Google’s Gmail and Yahoo Mail), protecting our private and confidential communications is critical in this time of mass surveillance.

November 19, 2016 By Steve Borsch

lov-internet_mainDid you know that Minnesota is the state with the highest rate of internet usage? We didn’t. Must be the combination of smart people and high number of months each year spent mainly indoors! Hat tip to our friend over at Blandin on Broadband, Ann Treacy, who highlighted this statistic in this post. The Gang chats about this and more on this week’s show.

Minnov8 Gang 380 – IoT’s Yin & Yang

October 22, 2016 By Steve Borsch

yin-yang_mainIn Chinese philosophy and religion there are two principles, one negative, dark, and feminine (yin) and one positive, bright, and masculine (yang) whose interaction influences the destinies of creatures and things. This week we experienced both with the Internet of Things (IoT): The massive distributed denial of service on Friday was definitely ‘yin’ and today’s IoTHackday was definitely a positive and bright ‘yang’.

Hosts: Steve Borsch and Phil Wilson (Tim Elliott is off this week)

Minnov8 Gang 379 – Hacking the Internet of Things

October 15, 2016 By Steve Borsch

iothackday_mainOne of the most interesting Internet of Things (IoT) events of the year is IoTHackday, a fun, FREE day that brings together teams, novel ideas, and an entrepreneurial spirit to dream up and build cool new devices to solve everyday problems.

Teams form, submit their ideas ahead of the event, and hack for 12 hours. The public is invited to attend at the end of the day at 8pm, vote for their favorite teams. Top teams receive hardware and prizes!

Justin Grammens is our guest this week (see profile below) and he tells all about IoTHackday, an event started with Patrick Delaney, and one you will definitely want to attend.

Minnov8 Gang 365 – Tech is Accelerating

July 2, 2016 By Steve Borsch

accl-change-mainWe’ve mentioned before how tech is accelerating and the “summer slowdown” we used to know (and how we’d struggle to find stuff to talk about in the summers of 2008 – 2010) has totally and completely abated. Technology innovation is moving at an ever-faster speed and is also compressing the time for these new innovations to be released. So hold on as we explore some topics that you will undoubtedly find interesting and compelling.

Honeywell Creates New #IoT Division

May 3, 2016 By Steve Borsch

honeywellpsHoneywell Process Solutions (HPS), has established a Digital Transformation unit to help manufacturers harness the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and more rapidly deploy the technologies that will allow them to better manage and analyze data, according to Automation World.

As manufacturing systems grow more complex, it has become more important for automation suppliers to provide not only the components but an easier means to a complete solution. This trend carries over into the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), where it’s not always easy for production operations to make the best use of the data that’s being gathered to improve their processes.

So automation suppliers are increasingly creating business units and systems dedicated to digital deployment to best leverage the IIoT technologies they’re offering.

Minnov8 Gang 356 – Light Up the Night

April 2, 2016 By Steve Borsch

flarean-mainOur guest host this week is our good friend Julio Ojeda-Zapata. Besides enjoying his guest-hosting on the podcast, we were particularly interested in an article he wrote on Flarean, a St. Paul-based startup (see St. Paul tech startup’s mission is to light the way – literally ).

This post title about “light up the night” is a bit of a misnomer since they’ve been out testing stuff at night since they’re in stealth startup mode. Flarean’s vision is, “…to have every street, every home in America and the world connected by beautiful products that save lives and inform people about public safety.” It’s a big vision with a strong purpose and some cool technology to back it up.

Joining us as our guest this week is the founder and CEO of Flarean, Jason Barnett. Find out what they do, how he started it, his team, and where they’re headed next (and it’s much more than lights at night!).

Minnov8 Gang 348 – Preserving It In Amber

January 30, 2016 By Steve Borsch

Steve’s Security Tip of the Week

scared-kidTIP: SECURE YOUR BABY MONITOR! Just-plug-‘em-in baby monitors are one super-simple way that hackers can watch your baby—or eavesdrop on you in your home—with video and audio. Most people just buy them (and webcams too) and plugin them in. No password…or a weak one.

There are people that go online and search for, and are finding, those weak password baby monitors and webcams. It’s one thing to have a creep spying on you. It’s quite another that many of these scumbags are breaking in and some are taunting, scaring and basically terrorizing toddlers and kids. There’s a term for them now too: griefers (taken from online video game harassers). Here’s one example story and here’s another one from a local TV news station.

Stay safe….here’s how.
