Minnov8 Gang 315 – Flyin’ and Spyin’

May 30, 2015 By Steve Borsch

Turns out this past week there was a mysterious low-flying plane over the Twin Cities which has raised questions of surveillance. The Minneapolis FBI office only says they don’t comment on “operational matters,” undoubtedly because they don’t want people like Phil to know they’re being watched.  😉

Hosts: Steve Borsch, Tim Elliott, Graeme Thickins and Phil Wilson.
Music: Blues for Suze by Ron Davis under a Creative Commons License.

Mayo Clinic’s DMC in Fast Company

May 26, 2015 By Steve Borsch

mayo-conceptWhen Mayo Clinic‘s pitch to the legislature about their desire to make Rochester the hub of a Destination Medical Center for $6.5 billion, there was some buzz about it but then it died off.

Or so it seemed.

Fast Company just published The $6.5 Billion, 20-Year Plan To Transform An American City: Rochester, Minnesota, is home to the world-famous Mayo Clinic. Will an ambitious new project make it a global medical-tourism destination?

One of the world’s best-known hospitals has a problem.

The Mayo Clinic is located in the small city of Rochester (pop. 111,000), about a two-hour drive from Minneapolis, Minnesota. And it is, right this minute, competing fiercely for a small-but-extremely-lucrative slice of the global medical tourism industry. The wealthy American, European, east Asian, and Gulf Arab patients who have been the clinic’s bread and butter have been instead choosing to get treatment abroad or at domestic rivals like Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University or the Cleveland Clinic. But that may be changing—and the reason, if not the construction, is simple: the Destination Medical Center.

But it’s not just medical tourism. It’s also turning Rochester in to a biotech startup hub:

That’s an audacious 20-year plan by Rochester, the Minnesota state government, the Mayo Clinic, and their private partners to spend more than $6.5 billion on a kind of real-life version of SimCity, designed to turn Rochester into a global biotech hub, and double its population in the process.

Seems like there is a phenomenal opportunity to accelerate Minnesota into the medical tourism space as well as a focus on biotech…if the legislature looks ahead strategically. We hope they will.

Minnov8 Gang Podcast & Memorial Day 2015

May 23, 2015 By Steve Borsch

memday2015The Minnov8 Gang is off during the Memorial Day holiday and week. We’ll be back next week for another episode of the podcast.

Along with others during this United States holiday, we salute the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and way of life.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans — established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Comcast to Rollout 2GB Internet Service in the Twin Cities

May 21, 2015 By Steve Borsch

comcast2gbComcast will begin offering 2 Gigabit internet service in the Twin Cities later in the year. As competition from CenturyLink’s fiber rollout accelerates—coupled with increasing consumer use of on-demand video services putting pressure on internet service providers to offer ever-faster speeds—means Comcast must continue to offer more to their customer base and it looks like they’re delivering it this fall.

The company will also be testing DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which is certain to push speeds higher.

COMCAST TO OFFER 2 GIGABIT INTERNET SERVICE ACROSS TWIN CITIES

Gigabit Pro Will Be Available To More Than 600,000 Homes by End of 2015
New 250 Mbps Internet Tier Will Also Launch Across Entire Service Area

SAINT PAUL, MN – May 21, 2015 – Comcast today announced it will roll out its new residential multi-gigabit broadband service to more than 600,000 homes across the Twin Cities later this year. Gigabit Pro is a symmetrical, 2 Gigabit-per-second service that will be delivered via a fiber-to-the-home solution and offered to customers throughout Comcast’s footprint in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area.

In addition, Comcast will be launching Extreme 250, a new 250 Mbps Internet speed tier, available to Twin Cities area customers later this year.

Gigabit Pro will be available to homes within close proximity of Comcast’s fiber network and will require installation of professional-grade equipment.  The company has fiber at the core of its network and, for the past decade, it has invested billions of dollars to extend that fiber deeper into neighborhoods and closer to homes. To date, Comcast has built out more than 145,000 route miles of fiber across its nationwide service area, including the Twin Cities, to serve residential communities with a fiber to the home solution.

“The Twin Cities is one of the most sophisticated technology markets in the country, and we’re excited about the opportunity to bring an entirely new level of broadband access to the region,” said Jeff Freyer, Vice President, Comcast – Twin Cities Region. “Whether it’s Gigabit Pro, Extreme 250, or one of our existing internet options, Comcast continues to look for opportunities to increase speeds, providing a wide range of options that meet customer needs.”

In addition, Comcast is currently testing DOCSIS 3.1, a scalable, national, next generation multi-gigabit technology solution with plans to begin launching in early 2016. When fully deployed, it will mean almost every customer in Comcast’s national footprint will be able to receive gigabit speeds over the existing network (a combination of both fiber and coax).  For more information, please see http://corporate.comcast.com/comcast-voices/imagine-where-2-gigabit-speeds-will-take-you.

Comcast has made significant investments in the Twin Cities over the years, doubling the capacity of its network every 18 months. Additionally, the company has been delivering multi-gig (up to 10 Gbps) Ethernet service to businesses in the Twin Cities since 2013.

About Comcast Cable:
Comcast Cable is the nation’s largest video, high-speed Internet and phone provider to residential customers under the XFINITY brand and also provides these services to businesses under the Comcast Business brand. Comcast has invested in technology to build an advanced network that delivers among the fastest broadband speeds, and brings customers personalized video, communications and home management offerings. Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) is a global media and technology company. Visit www.comcastcorporation.com for more information.

Minnov8 Gang 313 – Riding With The King

May 16, 2015 By Steve Borsch

riding-with-the-king_mainWe play a lot of blues music on this podcast, primarily since I (Steve) love the blues. As such, I asked the guys if it was cool that we dedicate this show to blues legend BB King (website; Wikipedia; CNN tribute video) since he passed away on Thursday. Their answer was a resounding, “Yes!”.

The music chosen for the intro today evokes that guy, Riley B. King, who became known by his stage name B.B. King (he got the “BB” starting out since people called him “Blues Boy King”). He was an American Hall of Fame blues singer, songwriter and guitarist with over 50 albums and 15 Grammy awards. Rolling Stone ranked King number 6 on its 2011 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. RIP BB King.

Videos: Riding With The King with Eric Clapton and The Thrill is Gone a few years ago and BB performing that same song in 1971 when he was 46 years old.

Minnov8 Gang 310 – Why I Love Steroids

April 25, 2015 By Steve Borsch

julio-steroids-mainThough we’ve never actually seen our guest-host, Julio Ojeda-Zapata, take anabolic steroids—nor have we experienced, or even heard about, any ‘roid rage incidents he has been in—we do know he’s incredibly strong and ripped which will help him continue to lift all the tech gadgets he receives when they arrive.

Most importantly, Julio is quite passionate about Ignite Minneapolis, has delivered a fun and delightful presentation at the 2012 event, and we kick of this week’s show discussing the Spring 2015 event he attended. Maybe he’ll present on ‘roids at Ignite Minneapolis in October?
